Removing the EIS on a Mercedes E-Class can be challenging without instructions or the know how to do it. We have dug through multiple videos and how to do its to find the best way to remove the EIS from a W212 from years 2009 to 2014. For the W211 procedure, please reference here. Here’s what we found and the tools necessary to complete the job.
Removal time: 1 Hour
Tools needed: Flat head, trim removal tool or putty knife that is plastic, J hook, pliers, T25 Torx
Step by step instructions:
The goal is to remove the boot out of the way that fits around the steering column to allow hand access through the dashboard near where the EIS sits and pull it out.
Step #1:
First, start with the plastic trim piece that lays above the EIS that is attached to the center vents and runs across the passenger dashboard. You will need a putty knife so not to damage the area around where pressure needs to be applied to disconnect the fasteners that hold the trim to the dash.
Step #2:
Working slowly from left to right, pause when you feel resistance at the center air vents.
Step #3:
You will need to use a J hook and insert into the left vent until you feel a fastener, pull the plastic clip until the trim piece is lose enough to pull out.
Step #4:
Work to the right vent and do the same thing on the right side until it is free to pull out.
Step #5:
Now go to the passenger side and use your pry tool to remove the trim piece on the side of the dash.
Step #6:
The main trim piece should be detached but still held by 3 wire connectors, disconnect them by pushing the plastic clips down and pulling them out. Then safely put the trim piece in the rear seats as to not get damaged.
Step #7:
Go back to the driver side and remove the driver air vent with the pry tool, once removed disconnect the 2 wire connectors and safely store in the rear seats.
Step #8:
Now remove the plastic bezel that sits around the cluster with the pry tool gently, once removed you will have access to the boot.
Step #9:
Work your way along the boot and the plastic panel with a hook and flat head to disconnect free so that you can have access with your hands.
Step #10:
Remove the ring that holds the EIS to the dashboard with pliers, by loosening the ring counterclockwise until it spins off.
Step #11:
Remove the bottom panel where the OBD and hood latch are with T25 torx so you have better access.
Step #12:
The black air hose below will need to be disconnected so the EIS can be removed.
Step #13:
You will also need to disconnect the boot that connects to the steering wheel plastic bezel, as the white clip that holds the wiring needs to be raised enough so the EIS can pass through so it can be removed. Using the J hook to raise the white clip may help a little but do not raise to much as to break the clip.
Step #14:
Now safely press with your finger against the EIS until it is pushed inside the dashboard.
Step #15:
Remove the blue and green plastic wire connectors from the EIS.
Step #16:
You will need to use both hands to guide the EIS out while rotating the boot so that is not in the way.
