EIS location on Mercedes CLK C209

Process to remove EIS for a Mercedes CLK C209 can be nerve wracking at first due to the number of different components that need to be removed in order to remove the electronic ignition switch from the dashboard. The instrument cluster will need to be removed along with the radio and ac unit assembly in order for the EIS to be taken out. With a little help, you’ll have it out in no time and ready to be shipped to us so we can make a key fob replacement for your Mercedes.

Removal time: 45 minutes

Tools needed: Needle nose pliers, flat head, T20 torx driver, pick

Step by step instructions:

Step #1:

Remove bottom kick panel by removing T20 screws that hold it in place, you don’t need to disconnect the hood release or OBD port as long as your careful not to step on sit on the panel while working

Step #2:

Remove side panel cover on dashboard on driver side and remove T20 torx bolt at bottom that holds EIS panel to dashboard

Step #3:

Remove running light switch assembly by depressing metal clips with flat head so they release the switch and disconnect the wire connector, there is another T20 screw at the top of the inside of the light switch compartment that needs to be removed as well

Step #4:

Pull emergency brake lever and remove screws behind it

Step #5:

Next remove the instrument cluster by sliding the pick into the hole that until it snaps and releases the clip that holds the bezel, do the same on the opposite side as well that sits below the gauge knob, then the whole instrument cluster can be removed. Remove any electrical connectors and set aside

Step #6:

Next there will be 2 T20 torx bolts that sit on top where the cluster just came out that hold the EIS panel to the dashboard that need to be removed

Step #7:

Now work your way to the center console because the other screws are hidden behind that, you will need to remove the hazard light panel with a flat head until it’s disconnected from the dash

Step #8:

Next move the ashtray cover down until there are 2 T20 screws that are exposed that can be removed with the driver

Step #9:

Use a flat head to pry out the ac unit, now you can remove the radio

Step #10:

Next remove the radio by removing the 4 T20 screws that hold it in place, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom, once the bottom screws are out push the silver clips up so it unlocks and pull it out and set aside

Step #11:

Now the 3 remaining screws are exposed for the EIS panel, remove those and the panel can finally be removed

Step #12:

Simply remove the ring that holds the EIS to the front of the dashboard by spinning off with needle nose pliers

Step #13:

Disconnect any wire electrical connectors to the ignition switch
